Exempt me from the military service
  • What is a compulsory military service in Lithuanian army?

Since 2015 Lithuania has re-introduced compulsory military service for a period of 9 months. The obligation is applied to male Lithuanian citizens aged 18 to 23 regardless of their place of residence. Dual citizenship does not relieve from military conscription. Conscription is on the lottery basis, i.e. names of the draftees will be randomly generated by a piece of computer software. The new Lithuanian army conscription list is announced each January on the website https://sauktiniai.karys.lt/

  • How do I know if I am on the conscription list?

It is important to note that conscripts are not informed personally by any means. Rather it is an individual responsibility of each Lithuanian citizen to check the conscription list each January and, if on the list, contact the authorized representative. Failing to do so will result in administrative fines and in some situations even losing the Lithuanian citizenship. Ignorance does not excuse responsibility.

  • I don’t have my Lithuanian passport yet although I have been granted with Lithuanian citizenship. Does that mean I cannot be on the conscription list?

If you have been granted with Lithuanian citizenship and you fall into the age bracket of 18 to 23 you can be included in the conscription list despite the fact that you still have not applied or received your Lithuanian passport yet. You are already in the Lithuanian citizens registry. To be able to check if you are on the conscription list you are required to provide the last to digits of your Lithuanian personal number which you obviously don’t know as you still don’t have your Lithuanian passport. We are able to assist you in obtaining your Lithuanian personal number before you will receive your Lithuanian passport.

  • What do I do if I am on the conscription list?

There are a number of reasons why a draftee can be exempt from the military service. Submitting proper paperwork in a timely manner is crucial. We at IN JURE A Law Firm assist our clients on this matter by acting on behalf of a conscript in order to settle the formal deferment from mandatory military service.

  • Will I be exempted permanently?

It is important to note that exemption from conscription is valid only for the ongoing year. Conscription is renewed each year and a person can appear on the draftee list again (if after exemption – until he is 26) on a lottery basis.

  • Why IN JURE A Law Firm?

    – We work on the Success Fee basis, i.e. absolutely no upfront payment – you pay only after you are exempted from the military service. The procedure takes 3 to 6 weeks.

    – Dealing with foreign official authorities may be challenging in terms of a language barrier, bureaucracy and lack of awareness in national legislation. We advise on the best reason for draftee exemption and do all the paperwork on your behalf.

    – We have experience with complicated and non-standard military deferment cases.

    – Bonus for our clients – we check the conscription list for our clients each January for the entire conscription period and update them with their status making sure they will not miss out on any important information related to compulsory service in Lithuanian army.
