I am happy to tell you my experience with INJURE law firm and the partner Dainius Ambrazaitis

First a little background: Many of you probably know that Canada is a cold country for much of the year. As you age, it becomes harder to deal with the harsh weather. I wanted to explore options for retirement in a warmer country. I looked at the locations where Canadians usually winter in; Florida, Mexico, Panama etc. I didn’t consider Florida as an option as Canadians can only stay in the U.S. for 183 days without invoking residency and a whole host of other problems. I also did not want to move to a third world corrupt country south of the border. I then began exploring the option of moving to Europe.

The initial options that I saw were the golden visa program which gives you a resident permit. Various conditions apply in three different countries that I looked at, namely Portugal , Malta & Cyprus. Most of the programs require you to buy real estate in the area of 300 – 500 thousand Euros just to get a residence permit, not a passport. There are also loads of fees built into these programs! While watching a YouTube Video I heard about citizenship by descent. I realized that since my heritage was “Litvakise”, I could qualify for a Lithuanian passport, so I decided to investigate the procedure of reclaiming citizenship.

Should I do it myself? I looked at the web page from the Lithuanian embassy and it looked quite straight forward. I phoned the consulate and spoke to a nice woman who explained that most of the work was translation and it’s easy. I was further emboldened because I have an extensive legal background. So I began the process myself. The first procedure was to write to the archives and get the birth certificate. I wrote to the archives a few days later, bingo, they emailed back that they found everything and gave me a reference number and told to wire a nominal amount in Euros to the archives. Then I started to look at doing all of the translation. I went online to UPWORK and spoke to at least 10 different people in Lithuania about translating all these documents. ** But there was a hitch. Not only did the documents have to be translated, but the translation had to be certified by a notary public. It was then that I realized that whole bunch of things can go wrong and there was no guidance anywhere. I also knew that I would be receiving documents back and forth until I had the complete file assembled. Furthermore there was another problem that I no idea how to deal with namely the name changes. On my father ** birth certificate he had a Lithuanian first name and a Yiddish first name; none of which appeared on his legal documents in Canada. Additionally, he truncated his last name when he immigrated to Canada. None of the names on his birth certificate matched the name on his Canadian passport. It was at this time that I said; hold on, I am not going to do this myself – this is way too complicated. As well, I knew that each time I made an error I would likely get the whole file back and have to correct the documents; and what if it got lost in the mail?

It was by good fortune that I stumbled on INJURE law firm. I contacted the firm and spoke with Dainius. I felt very confident with his ability during the meeting and agreed to engage him to secure my citizenship. He guided me through all the procedures and I was able to put together the complete file within a few weeks. He dealt with the issue of the conflict with the different names flawlessly writing an incredibly clear and succinct affidavit backing including copies of name change court orders etc.

Then, I had to notarize the documents which was very straight forward. Because Canada is not signatory to the Hague convention on Apostile, I had to have the documents certified. I went down to the Ontario Government office in downtown Toronto and certified the documents and sent everything to him by courier. Before sending them, I photographed every page and sent it to his law firm so he could check everything before being sent.

Within a very short period of time (about a week) the entire package was lodged with the migration department in Vilnius. But there was a hitch. The migration department would not accept the certification of the Ontario government. On his own initiative, Dainius went down to the Canadian consulate in Vilnius and had the documents re-certified. If not for INJURE, the entire package would have been sent back to me and I would have had to have it re-certified; then re-submitted.

SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS: I was extremely pleased with the work that was done by INJURE law firm. It was extremely professional, I was able to communicate with Dainius every step of the way and he paid very strict attention to every detail. The completed application was accepted and my citizenship was restored in a timely manner. Looking back at the whole procedure and all the work that was done, I can say that if I had done it myself I would have made numerous errors. They guided me through the entire process, and made it easy. I look forward to taking a trip to Lithuania to see my ancestral homeland.

If you have the good fortune of having Lithuanian roots, getting Lithuanian citizenship without investing millions of Euros is truly a bargain even if you have no intentions of ever using it at this time. The fact that you have another Tier A passport is a ‘put option’ in other words something that you can use at anytime enabling you to live & work in any EU country. My situation was quite difficult as my father left Lithuania around 1928 and I did not have any document which could link my father’s relationship with Lithuania.
