Anyone who holds Lithuanian (EU) passport is automatically an EU citizen and thereby entitled to study at any EU university under the same conditions as nationals.

It is no longer a secret that there are great differences between the tuition fees paid by students who are EU nationals and those who are non-EU nationals. Home fees are normally 50% cheaper than International ones and are provided only to local students.

Also, holding a European passport means you no longer need to apply for a student visa that is much more difficult to acquire than a tourist one, and you are also entitled to work during your education.

    Tuition fee

There are significant differences between the tuition fee for EU and non-EU students studying in European Universities. For instance, the average tuition fee for a master’s program in Europe for an EU national is 5.100 EUR and 10.170 EUR for students outside of EU.

For International bachelor program, the average tuition fee for EU student is 4.500EUR and 8.600 EUR for non-EU students. While students interested in studying Medicine in the US pay between $20–40,000 per year. However medical studies in Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and many other countries in Europe are free.

In England, EU residents pay an average of 7,569 EUR to 2, 600 EUR per year as tuition fee, while fees for non-EU residence ranges from 4, 255 to 27,700 EUR.

In Austrian, Denmark and Switzerland University, all EU students are entitled to free education. While non-EU students pay an average of 726 EUR per semester, and up to 35,000 EUR for specialized courses.

In the Netherlands, bachelor degree programs for EU students cost 2000 EUR per year, while the average fee for non-EU students between 6,000 to 12,000 EUR per year, and 8,000 to 20,000 EUR for a master’s degree.

    Student loan

Another area in which students with European passport benefit so much is in obtaining a student loan. Students loan are only available to a student who is an EU national, and there are a lot of exclusive grants, and scholarships opportunities that are only available to EU nationals too. Non-EU nationals who desire to be on scholarship are required to apply for funding anywhere else.

Finally, if you do the math, going through the process of reinstating Lithuanian citizenship brings rewards almost immediately if you are planning on studying.

Having Lithuanian citizenship affords you the opportunity of benefiting from first-class education system in EU and obtaining a residence permit that gets you entitled to financial support as an EU national.
